A native of New York, Dr. Dhrymes trained at NYU in Addiction Psychiatry, where he was fortunate to be taught by esteemed faculty such as Dr. Marc Galanter and Dr. Stephen Ross, leaders in the field. He trained at St. Vincent's Hospital in General Psychiatry. He received his medical degree from the State University of New York at Brooklyn. He received his Bachelor's Degree cum laude from Columbia University, where he also completed the Post-Baccalaureate Pre-Medical Program. He is Board Certified in Psychiatry by the American Board of Psychiatry and Neurology.

 

In addition to treating patients in his private practice, Dr. Dhrymes is an Attending Physician and Director of the Dual-Diagnosis Inpatient Unit at the Department of Veterans Affairs Medical Center in Manhattan. In his work treating military veterans, Dr. Dhrymes has experience treating complex symptomatology such as severe addiction, depression, Post-Traumatic Stress Disorder, severe anxiety disorders, and traumatic brain injury, frequently in the context of chronic pain syndromes. Dr. Dhrymes is also an Attending Psychiatrist at Bellevue Hospital Center's Psychiatric Emergency Department (Comprehensive Psychiatric Emergency Program), providing triage, assessments and treatment to patients either brought in by ambulance or self-presenting with psychiatric emergencies such as suicidal ideation, severe mania, or serious effects related to intoxication or withdrawal syndromes.

During the COVID-19 crisis, Dr. Dhrymes has continued to treat patients for mood disorders, anxiety disorders, and compulsive behaviors, in the hospital setting including patients with concurrent diagnosis of COVID-19 on medical wards; he has also continued to treat patients at Bellevue Hospital Center for psychiatric emergencies during the COVID crisis.

In the aftermath of Hurricane Sandy, Dr. Dhrymes served as interim director of the Medication-Assisted Opioid Treatment Program. He also provided coverage for psychiatric consultations in the general hospital for patients experiencing acute psychiatric issues on intensive care units, and in other surgical and medical settings.

Adding to his variety of experience in treating patients, Dr. Dhrymes has seen patients on an on-call basis referred from NYU Student Health Center to the NYU Medical Center ER for crises, has worked in a clinic setting during his residency training, and has testified as an expert witness on many occasions in Mental Hygiene Court. He has also worked part time in an opioid medication-assisted addiction treatment program, and at a day treatment program for co-occurring general psychiatric illness with other illnesses. Over the course of his training, Dr. Dhrymes has experience at NYU Medical Center, Bellevue Hospital Center, St. Vincent's Hospital, Lenox Hill Hospital, Long Island College Hospital, Kings County Hospital Center, and SUNY Downstate University Hospital.

Dedicated to teaching, Dr. Dhrymes is on the faculty of NYU School of Medicine. He is a Clinical Assistant Professor of Psychiatry, and teaches and supervises NYU Medical Students in their clinical rotation in General Psychiatry. He supervises and teaches advanced trainees in Addiction Psychiatry in the inpatient and emergency department treatment of addiction disorders, as well as treatment in the private practice setting. He is on the faculty and selection committee and is the VA's inpatient site supervisor for the NYU Addiction Psychiatry Fellowship Program.

 

Dr. Dhrymes was named the Manhattan VA Medical Center's facility-wide employee of the month in September 2013 for outpatient clinic leadership following Hurricane Sandy. Dr. Dhrymes was also awarded Teacher of the Year for the Psychiatry Fellowship by NYU for the 2013-2014 academic year. He was also honored with the VA's Special Recognition Award for crisis management, teamwork and leadership in June 2015. In July 2019, he was appointed Director of the Dual-Diagnosis Unit at the VA Medical Center, after having served as Associate Unit Chief for 8 years.
